MANON OSSEVOORT

Listening Comprehension activity

Dutch actor, Manon Ossevoort decided she wanted a bit of an adventure. So she set out on a journey from Europe to the South Pole... on a tractor!

Manon Ossevoort (born 1976 in Vriezenveen, Overijssel)  travelled by tractor from the Netherlands, through the Balkans, down through Africa to Cape Horn, then by boat to the Antarctic, collecting dreams (written on pieces of paper by people she meets). She is performing her theater show 'DOEN' (Do It!) in some post-conflict countries on her way, and raising money for War Child. She is sponsored by the Italian manufacturer of the tractor.
By the end of April 2006 she had travelled right down through Egypt and Sudan, crossed into Ethiopia and then reached the border with Kenya. She had picked up a little dog, which is travelling with her. Her plan was to travel through northern Kenya and into Uganda, before proceeding southwards.
By December 3 2007 she had reached Tanzania, 30 months and 20,000 km into the trip. She made the front page of BBC online news. The tractor was holding up just fine although it was slow, rough going.
By October 22 2008 she had reached Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. Before crossing the ocean and continuing her travel across Antarctica to the south pole, she flew over to the Arctic (Nunavut) in February 2009 for training.
